Movie Weekend

"The Change-Up" and "30 Minutes or Less" were the two movies Melanie and I ended up seeing this weekend while in search of lighter fare.
 0-2.
I thought The Change-Up was pretty bad and mostly in bad taste until 30 Minutes made it look like an Oscar winner.
Let's start with 30 Minutes. I'll go the easy way and say it's just garbage. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about it and is easily the most offensive movie I've seen in a very long time. I would say it even approaches "MacGruber" levels of stink. The best thing about this movie is that it only lasts an hour and 23 minutes. I won't even bother with the plot or characters because it is painful to even think about. Let's just say if you goes to this movie, I warned you.
Change-Up starts off gross and it doesn't get much better. Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman are the leads in the latest "Freaky Friday" redo and their considerable talents are mostly wasted.
The biggest problem with the movie is it doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be. It veers from raunchy comedy to drama to romantic comedy, and the levels are so uneven it feels like a ride on one of those old wooden roller coasters.
If you've seen everything else that's out there, with the exception of 30 Minutes of course, then I would watch this movie.

On a separate note,  Hollywood continues remaking movies this coming Friday with the release of "Fright Night." It makes sense in this "Twilight" vampire teen-angst era, but I think it will not do justice to the 1985 movie of the same name.
That is a movie I watch every time it comes on TV. It is a horror movie with the right amount of  humor and campiness. It stars William Ragsdale as a teenager who discovers his next door neighbor, played wonderfully by Chris Sarandon, is a vampire. Amanda Bearse, of "Married With Children" fame plays the love interest and Roddy McDowell does a good turn as TV actor Peter Vincent-Vampire Killer.
Someone else will have to review the newest installment, because it looks just too slick and humorless.
