With body counts that resemble “Commando” and sequences that bring to mind the opening scene of “Saving Private Ryan,” Sylvester Stallone has once again proven why he is one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars.
Three decades removed from his Academy Award-winning “Rocky,” Stallone has written and directed a movie with such male star power that I thought they would be handing out testosterone shots at the door.
With the quality of the cast, just cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger were all that were needed. But surprise, surprise, while there won’t be any awards for subtlety, even the most over-the-top moments didn’t really feel like it was too much. And if you need to find someone to blow stuff up, hire whoever was in charge of blowing stuff up for this movie. The fights are good but the blasts are awesome.
Stallone and Jason Statham lead a group of mercenaries and their on-screen chemistry is as good as any I’ve seen. Their band of men include Jet-Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren. Yes, he’s not dead. He looks like he joined Stallone in a steroid party, but is actually pretty good. This could lead to more work for the big guy, much like the work Stallone threw Mickey Rourke’s way.
I saw this at a matinee, but definitely would have gladly paid full-price. $6 out of $7.
