If nothing else I’ve learned through the years of playing fantasy football, it’s best to have a plan heading into the draft-and then be able to change it on the fly.
OK, drafting 11th in a 12-team league isn’t great, but after a presumed run on running backs, I figured I’d have a shot at Andre Johnson and a stud quarterback like Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees.
Yeah, right, Rodgers went second, Brees fifth and Peyton Manning sixth while Johnson was taken seventh.
What to do, what to do?
Round 1
Decided to start with a top-of the-line wide receiver and figured I couldn’t do much better than Randy Moss, a perennial 1,000 yard-plus, double-digit touchdowns performer. His being in a contract year doesn’t figure to hurt, either.
Round 2
Decided to go after another receiver even with running backs like Frank Gore, DeAngelo Williams and Steven Jackson available. With Calvin Johnson I see a receiver ready to put up mega-stats with the development of Matthew Stafford and a decent running game.
Round 3
A nod to the cheeseheads with the pickup of Ryan Grant. No running back-by-committee to worry about and he’ll catch the occasional pass to grab some extra yards. Will be fighting with the talented receiving corps for scores, but should find his way into double digits.
Round 4
With the early run on quarterbacks, I was pleased to see Philip Rivers available. Vincent who? The Chargers will have more than enough options for Rivers to gun for and can you really go wrong with Antonio Gates as a target? Their schedule is among the easiest in the league this year as well.
Round 5
After averaging just 3.6 ypc in 2009, I figure a turnaround is in the cards for Chicago Bear Matt Forte. They love to use him as a receiver (57-471) and I buy into the theory that Mike Martz makes everything better.
Round 6
Much like the QBs, tight ends were off the board fairly quick. I could have gone with Tony Gonzalez, but it’s time for a changing of the guard with Jermichael Finley. The Packers’ second-year man has had a good preseason and hopefully that will translate into the regular season.
Round 7
With the injury to Sidney Rice, someone has to pick up the slack for the Vikings and that should mean an uptick in targets for Bernard Berrian - assuming Bret Favre doesn’t change his mind about playing.
The Rest
Had Joe Flacco targeted as a backup but saw him go right before my eighth-round selection. Made my only homer pick and got Donovan McNabb instead. Jahvid Best was in my sights as well, but was snatched from my grasp in round 10. Reggie Bush in round nine was a good value and finished off my running backs with Arizona’s Tim Hightower. Kenny Britt should get some love from Vince Young and the departure of Brandon Marshall should lead to increased attention for the Broncos Jabar Gaffney. Got the Chicago Bears defense as ones I wanted were gone and finished it off with the big leg of Sebastian Janikowski.
How will these picks pan out? Hard to say; it’s really just a crap shoot.
