I was a little worried about two things heading into the movie. First, it was being brought by the same people who did "Paul Blart: Mall Cop." Second, I thought it might be one of those movies where you've seen the best parts in the trailers.
Kevin James and company redeemed themselves with this production and there was plenty more to the movie than what's been seen.
Basically it's a standard romantic comedy that works best when the animals are on the screen. There was only one extended sequence when the animals were off the screen and that's when the movie bogged down just a bit.
As head zookeeper at the Franklin Park Zoo, James loves his job and the animals love him in return. It isn't until after they witness an akward reunion between James and a former girlfriend (Leslie Bibb) that the animals speak up.
Scenes where James gets advice from the animals about how to woo his former flame are the best. The relationship James develops with Bernie the Gorilla, (gravelly-voiced by Nick Nolte) is central to the movie and the trip to T.G.I. Friday's is indeed funny.
Even with mature themes-but not too mature, this is a Happy Madison production after all-there is still enough silliness at the zoo to keep the kids entertained as well.
Rosario Dawson does a good turn as a fellow zookeeper and Joe Rogan gets some good face time as a rival for James' ex-girlfriend.
It takes a little bit for me to be offended, but still it is nice to see a movie that doesn't have to rely on vulgarity/crudity to be funny. I give it an $7 on the $10 scale.
