Weight worth the wait

With airlines charging for every bag, there are a few more issues with flying that may have to be dealt with.
Melanie had a conference in Baltimore last week, and with the price of gas, it was almost cheaper for me to fly with her instead of making the 18-hour round trip drive.
Of course to keep that flight cheap, I had to just take a carry-on and from the looks of it, so did just about everybody else on on way to Baltimore and back to Augusta.
Carry-ons have seemingly changed from small bags to small luggage now, and though I had a bag, I admit it must have weighed a good 30-40 pounds and Melanie dubbed it "the body bag."
The plane making the 30-minute connection from Atlanta to Augusta is a bit smaller than others, and overhead storage is almost non-existent. Oversized carry-ons are taken at the end of the jetway and loaded onto the plane from there. Therein is the underlying problem.
Our flight was a full one, and it was easy to see we weren't going to leave on time, especially with the pilot leaving the plane and walking around it outside. The problem was announced soon enough-the plane was overweight and they were going to have to remove three passengers.
I felt bad for the lady behind me because she was one of the ones who got called off. She was only on the plane because her previous flight had flown to Augusta and was turned back to Atlanta as the cloud cover was too low for the plane to land safely.
So, instead of pulling people off according to their weight (whew), I assume they pulled the last three people who had been on standby status.
With people trying to skip baggage fees, I wonder if there will be a recurring problem with planes being overweight. Hopefully that won't lead to any in-flight problems. I can also see the day when airlines will start to charge for carry-ons, and then where will we be?
